In the Shadow of the Blue Ridge
Item Price: $9.95
ISBN: 1-890306-10-X
Reviews: "Thanks to In The Shadow of the
Blue Ridge, the author has folded the Monacan's twentieth century
story into dialogue, so now our children can appreciate the human
side. To understand... Shadow... is to understand the drama of
social change right in our midst. Now we can grab it and hold
on to it."
-Dr. Peter Houck,
Virginia Historian
"This story is deceptively simple, the life of a wise old
women of mixed ancestry , a love story that brings together good
people in spite of different backgrounds, and tragedy when the
forces of nature overwhelm them. But that is only the plot
outline: buried in the story of prejudice against "the other,"
is a subtext of the virulent racial policies of mid-century. It
conveys the flavor and aroma of the mountainside, and attacks our
preconceptions about class, education, and human worth, without
condescension, romanticization or pomposity."

In
the Shadow of the Blue Ridge |
A new story that
deals with the Monacan Indians and their tragic history- it is
heavily immersed with mountain life, beginning in 1898. Its
primary setting is also the Blue Ridge, its secondary is downtown
Lynchburg, Virginia, a small southern town. It is a rich,
historical novel that centers on the Great Depression and World War
II, realistically portraying how Lynchburg and mountain families
coped with the challenges. Understand how a young boy wears
croaker sacks on his legs to keep warm and walks the railroad tracks
for coal, and later joins the CCCs for a way out. |

Review: "This book captures the realities of
the hungry years of The Depression."
-Peter Viemeister,
Author/Historian, Hamilton's Books
"On the pages of Sharp Top you will take a step back in
history- your heartstrings will be touched as you explore the '30s
and '40s in the rural mountains of Virginia and gain insight to how
WWII changed them forever. The Mons Community no longer exists
and writings of this nature keep its vanishing history alive for
generations to come."

There
is a Season |
Follow a young
teenager's journey of faith that takes her to the autumn of her
years and strikes a chord for all as it unashamedly delves into the
brevity of life and its deeper meaning. However, it also
describes the devastating ills of depression and alcoholism as
Joellen Thaxton faces such challenges and ultimately rebels. This
story moves up in time, focusing on the fabulous fifties- a unique
period with coonskins, hula-hoops, teen-age hops, and the climatic
birth of rock and roll. Though known as the happy days,
brooding undercurrents of the cold war, communism, and "the bomb"
plagued the area, and Joellen had her own fears! But on a
lighter side, it takes you on a delightful trip down the Blue Ridge
Parkway in an RV, describing it in meticulous detail. |

A
Bittersweet Story |
Reaching from the Blue Ridge Mountains
to a small place on Virginia's
coast called Sandbridge, an intriguing secret weaves throughout
these pages. It stretches from the harrowing days of World War II
to the turbulent sixties ---- but an even larger story looms within.
Winds
of change were blowing across the Blue Ridge in the early 1930s.
This is a story of the human cost of creating the Shenandoah National
Park when over 500 families were forced off the mountains to make way
for the Park. Caught up in the change and being evicted from
their home, the Ralston family struggles with its dire consequences.
The unique case of eminent domain was one of the first blanket land
condemnations, and it was met with both fervent opposition and
deep-rooted sadness. The historic happening is humanized
through the eyes of Greyson Ralston and his twin sister. They
open a window for a look into the emotional upset of that period---a
time of heartbreaking change on the mountains.
It is a story of
displacement and sorrow---and ultimately faith and forgiveness. |
